George Lloyd Harvey (W4UI)

George Lloyd Harvey was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on September 9, 1913 to the late George A. Harvey and Gertie Kime Harvey.

George’s father, a druggist, established the Palace Drug Store in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1898, where George worked for many years. Hs father became ill during the depression and George took over the operation of the drug store.

In 1929 George passed the examination for an amateur radio license and was assigned the call sign W4UI and subsequently he passed the radio telephone first examination for operating a broadcast station and the radio telegraph license for operating shipboard radios.

George earned a Master’s degree in physics at the University of Arkansas and took graduate courses at Harvard, Columbia and New York Universities. During World War II, George taught electronics at Harvard University. After the war, he was an electronic engineer at Sperry Gyroscope Co. and a physicist at the Naval Research Laboratory.

George was a member of the Wayne County Amateur Radio Association in Goldsboro, NC.

George passed away on September 25, 2009
